American Vice President Kamala Harris and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will represent the United States at the Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland on June 15, the White House announced in a statement, cited by Reuters and dariknews.bg.
strong>The White House added that Harris will fill in at the June 15 summit in Lucerne for US President Joe Biden, who then has a planned campaign fundraiser hosted by George Clooney and Julia Roberts, the Associated Press noted.
"The vice president will underscore the U.S. government's commitment to supporting Ukraine's efforts to secure a just and lasting peace based on its sovereignty and territorial integrity," as well as the principles of the United Nations Charter, said Kirsten Allen, a spokeswoman for Harris. She added that Harris would "also reaffirm support for the people of Ukraine who are defending themselves against ongoing Russian aggression.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky widely promoted the peace conference and encouraged world leaders to attend, even as he accused Russia of trying to derail the summit with China's help, AP notes.
