Ice cave collapses in Iceland: two injured, two missing

An authorities spokesman said conditions at the scene were extremely severe.

Two people were injured and two are missing after an ice cave collapsed yesterday in the southeastern part of Iceland, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

A group of 25 tourists were visiting the Breidamerkurjökull glacier as part of a guided tour when the cave collapsed. Dozens of rescuers and two helicopters were dispatched to the scene, local television reported.

A spokesman for the authorities said that the conditions at the scene of the accident were extremely difficult.

Breidamerkurjökull, located in the southeastern part of the country, is a glacial tongue that extends from the southern Vatnajökull glacier into the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. The floating iceberg lagoon is one of Iceland's main tourist attractions and was used as a filming location for the James Bond films Death Valley View. and "Don't Die Today", as well as for "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider".

The region offers numerous opportunities for hiking through ice caves.
