The government of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires has submitted to the local council a proposal to rename a metro station in the name of the late Pope Francis, the head of the city government Jorge Macri announced on the social platform "Ex", BTA reports.

„I have sent to the legislative body a bill to rename the metro station on line D from „Catedrala“ of the “Cathedral - Pope Francis“, he wrote on the social network “Ex“.

According to Macri, the authorities want to pay tribute to “the first Pope of Argentina, as well as to a citizen who, remaining almost unnoticed, lived modestly among us“.

The mentioned metro station is located near the Buenos Aires Cathedral, where Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio served before becoming Pope Francis in March 2013.

The 88-year-old Pope Francis died on Monday morning after a stroke that caused a coma and cardiac arrest. He was being treated for severe bilateral bronchopneumonia at the “Agostino Gemelli“ hospital in February and March, and he was advised complete rest.

His funeral will take place on Saturday.
