Nadezhda Neynski: Recognition of Palestine is the result of a shake-up of trust in Israel - 1

Former Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynski commented on "The Day Begins" on BNT on the decision of a number of countries to recognize Palestine. According to her, this is both a form of pressure on Israel and an expression of the weakening support for it after the military actions in Gaza and the attack in Doha.

„For me, these are two things. On the one hand, this is pressure on Israel, and on the other – "an expression that in many European and other societies serious support for Israel is cracking due to the slaughter of innocents in Gaza and the attack that Israel carried out on Doha, destroying part of the Hamas leadership," said former Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky.

According to her, it was the attack in Doha that played a major role - it significantly undermined the peace talks, which were believed to be able to lead to a good result.

„Israel has never been in a better position in terms of its security and enjoyed great support from the international community. However, the attack in Doha largely discredits the efforts of President Trump and the Arab countries. Attacking the mediator in peace talks was perceived as betrayal. This shook the otherwise monolithic support for Israel and effectively began the process of requesting recognition of the Palestinian state,“ explained Neinsky.

She stressed that the idea of two states is not new, but the question is whether the Palestinian leadership can replace the role of the already discredited and weakened Hamas - a concern shared by the United States and countries such as Israel, Italy and Germany.

According to her, Hamas is currently almost destroyed, and Arab countries are making serious appeals for its final disarmament.

“The Arab world is at a new stage of its development and wants to continue the normalization of its relations with Israel. But if Israel annexes the West Bank, which is a possible response to the recognition of a Palestinian state, this will be perceived as crossing a red line,“ she warned.

According to her, the consequences would be twofold: economic - termination of all trade relations with the Arab world, and reputational - loss of the diplomatic breakthrough achieved in Prime Minister Netanyahu's relations with Arab countries.

Nejinsky added that the recognition of a Palestinian state is also a diplomatic issue for Bulgaria, but the situation is too complicated for our country to play a mediating role.
