Aid to Ukraine is an investment in our own security, not just a moral commitment. This was stated by former Defense Minister Todor Tagarev in an interview with BNR today.
"There have always been two trends in Europe. One that calls for more autonomy in European security, and in recent years also defense, and the other that relies on NATO for Europe's defense efforts and the defense of the continent," explained Tagarev.
The former minister emphasized that these two trends continue to exist today, which is also evident from the latest document of the European Commission. According to him, the positioning of Ukraine in the new European document is particularly important.
"I have personally been saying for several years that aid to Ukraine is an investment in our own security, that is, this is not just aid or a moral commitment that we strive to fulfill, but indirectly supports our own security. This Commission document goes even further. It says - Ukraine is the first line of defense of Europe", Tagarev pointed out.
The former minister expressed the opinion that in the near future we cannot expect a comprehensive peace agreement, but there are hopes for reaching a ceasefire agreement.
"When there is such a ceasefire agreement, serious negotiations should begin and a more lasting peace agreement should be sought. This could take months, it could take years", Todor Tagarev concluded.
