Europe made a strategic mistake - it did not formulate a political mechanism for an exit from the war

„This is not a peace plan, but a memorandum - an intention that is yet to be specified“, emphasized former Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev in the program „Offensive with Lyubo Ognyanov“ in connection with the 28 points of the peace document sent by President Donald Trump to Kiev and Moscow.

According to him, Trump is trying to prevent a negative scenario for Ukraine at the end of winter, when the country is threatened by an energy crisis, economic collapse and exhaustion at the front.

„In the spring of 2022, an agreement was almost reached in Istanbul. Today, Kiev is faced with difficult but necessary decisions in order to survive as a state“, Stanishev pointed out.

According to him, Europe made a strategic mistake – not formulating a political mechanism for an exit from the war.

„The Kremlin bears primary responsibility for the war. But it is naive to ignore the complex process that led to this“, Stanishev said and recalled the warnings from 2007–2008 regarding NATO expansion to Ukraine.

According to Stanishev, the Bulgarian political cycle in recent years has been characterized by a lack of vision, buying political comfort through spending and increasing debt – 16 billion leva this year and 20 billion next year.

„This is theft from the future. Almost all parties participated in the generous distribution without a secured budget“, he commented.

Stanishev did not rule out the possibility of creating a party around President Radev.

“The ruling party and the opposition are not popular enough. Radev is recognized as an alternative. Whether it will happen at the end of the mandate or after it - I don't know“, he said.

“Since we are in the EU, Bulgaria's place is in the core - the eurozone“, Stanishev was categorical.

According to him, during the sanctions against “Lukoil“ it was imperative for the state to guarantee the operation of the refinery, but according to him, in the German model, special managers are under judicial control. “We don't have them. This raises questions“, he concluded.
