"I insist that the competent authorities immediately provide security for the mayor of Bistritsa, Samuil Popov." This was stated by the mayor of Sofia, Vasil Tezriev, after Popov's car and front door were set on fire in the early hours of Monday. After an operation last night, the SDVR detained five people involved in the crime.
"What else needs to happen for there to be prevention? A person should be burned? The state should not wait for a tragedy to act," Terziev asked via his Facebook profile.
According to him, "security resources should be directed where there is a real risk - to employees who are subject to threats because of their work, instead of to self-forgetful deputies who are afraid to meet the "people's love" on the street."
"Mayors - regardless of their party and political color - should work calmly. We are closest to the people and when a mayor is intimidated, it is pressure on the entire community," Terziev said, recalling various forms of attacks in recent years, mentioning himself, Varna Mayor Blagomir Kotsev, who spent months in custody, and now Samuil Popov.
Later today, representatives of the Association of Mayors of Settlements will gather in protest in front of the city hall in Bistritsa.
