There is no prospect of an imminent end to the war in Iran, despite the optimistic statements of US President Trump. Separate from them are the political goals. Among them is that there is a change of regime in Iran. This was said in the program "Panorama" on BNT by former Defense Minister Angel Naydenov.
We are observing a war that in itself is terrible not only for Iran, but also for the Middle East. There is a potential for upheaval in Europe due to the disruption of routes, the increase in oil prices, he added.
The reason for the hostilities was the failure of the negotiations aimed at Iran's nuclear program, the cessation of support for Tehran's proxies. As a direct explanation from the American president, it was stated that the US must eliminate the threats, Naydenov said.
As tactical goals, we can also add the efforts to destroy Iran's air defense and naval forces. These are the military goals, the former defense minister noted.
Separate from them are the political goals. Among them is that there should be a change of regime in Iran. One of the main questions is whether air strikes alone can overthrow the regime or can they only weaken it. At this point, we see that the regime in Iran is showing sufficient resilience, sufficient ability to survive, but not only that, but to strike and threaten its neighbors. I think that the regime in Tehran cannot be overthrown with air strikes alone. As for the weakening of the regime, this is rather possible, commented Angel Naydenov.
The question of whether there is a political plan for an exit from the war is also very important, he noted.
As for Bulgaria and Europe, the first issue is the risk of terrorist acts on the territory of European countries, as well as at sites of European countries in the Middle East, Naydenov also said.
