Assoc. Smilov: We are going to the elections because GERB believes that there will be better results

I have two versions - one is that from the beginning GERB aimed at elections, but they waited for the convenient date so that 2 in 1 or possibly the parliamentary ones would be after the European ones, and the other is that GERB hesitated too long whether to govern with the PP-DB, or to go to elections

Assoc. Smilov: We are going to the elections because GERB believes that there will be better results - 1

The decision to go to elections is GERB's, that is indisputable.

This is what the political scientist and lecturer at SU "St. Kliment Ohridski" Prof. Daniel Smilov, program director of the Center for Liberal Strategies.

According to him, we are going to elections because GERB thinks that it will have better results and will be in a better negotiating position, but very often such predictions have turned out to be wrong. "I have two versions - one is that from the beginning GERB aimed at elections, but they waited for the convenient date so that 2 in 1 or possibly the parliamentary ones would be after the European ones, and the other is that GERB hesitated too much it will take a long time whether they will continue to govern with the PP-DB or go to the elections", he commented.

According to him, the better option would be for the early parliamentary elections to be 2 in 1 with the European ones on June 9. "GERB and DPS are not eager to tackle changes in the laws on the judiciary and with the relevant appointments," pointed out Associate Professor Smilov and specified that in the absence of an agreement and a government, these reforms are postponed.

"DPS and GERB work closely together. Delyan Peevski spoke through the mouth of Boyko Borisov and the GERB team, even when he did not speak himself. This symbiosis is very strong. GERB well protected the interests of DPS in everything that happened. I don't remember in the last 9 months that there was a topic on which the positions of these two parties diverged", the political scientist also commented.

He does not rule out the possibility of entering a spiral of early elections. "All the theater that took place will not benefit the Euro-Atlantic parties. There will be some erosion. This will enable parties such as "Revival" strongly mobilize their electorates. However, I do not expect such a big reshuffle that a new pro-European and pro-Atlantic government cannot be created. It seems to me that after what happened, PP-DB will hardly enter into interaction with GERB again," concluded Assoc. Smilov.
