Emil Sokolov: Politicians use the institutions as clubs in the electoral struggle - 1

"There are 2 months until the elections. Any accusations will never be able to be resolved factually and we will know the truth. However, the effect will be that some people will explain themselves, there will be loud headlines in the media, there will be talk of schemes, there will be mudslinging. The truth will not come out at all in these 2 months. No justice or righteousness will happen either. The purpose of these exercises is for someone to extract a pre-election dividend".

This is what political scientist Emil Sokolov commented to the BNR and predicted an ugly campaign, which is worrying for the citizens.

He called the parliamentary committees pre-election and gave the example of the one for Customs. They started appearing every week, the political scientist added.

"There is nothing wrong with parliament establishing control, clarifying facts and seeking the truth, bringing information to the institutions to be used for something constructive, but here it is about creating headlines in the media, sometimes yellow titles. The bad thing is that this is not only in NS. We see at the moment how each party has taken hold of one institution or state agency - where Customs, where the Ministry of the Interior, where something else, and in general they are fighting through them. As a narrative, if it continues in the next 2 months, I expect that on June 9, voter turnout will be so low that we will again ask ourselves the question - what are we going to do from now on".

According to him, the reason for making changes to the Constitution was correct, but, in his words, a strategic mistake was made: "These changes were planned to take place in 18 months, but the months turned out to be 9".

"Peevski has been picking up balls in the media since November, playing them off and moving towards provoking elections. This is Peevski's goal - to put himself in a position where he can push the government at any moment if he so chooses. That's how it happened," commented the political scientist in the program "Above all".

Borisov conveniently moved out of the way during the government negotiations, he also reminded and added that about half of the ministers in the current caretaker government are GERB. When a GERB party cadre is prime minister, it is normal for the ministers to be from the second echelon of GERB, he believes.

According to him, this government will hold elections through revisions:

"The caretaker government raising election balls is not a surprise. We can also find out in the parliament. I am concerned about what is happening in the other institutions - in the Ministry of the Interior, in the Customs, what is the role of the National Security Agency. /.../ If there was pressure on Zhivko Kotsev - this is wrong and should be pointed out, but one should not be left with the impression that when pressure is put on someone, it can be an indulgence for something else. When someone has committed a crime or is suspected, they must face the consequences. It should have been said - if there were suspicions of violations, the prosecutor's office, instead of releasing recordings and photos, should have taken the necessary measures and not engaged in any other shenanigans. This is not about this person, it is about the institutions reacting in some normal way. The conversation should have been about preserving statehood.
