On the eve of May 24 - the Day of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture and Slavic literature - the writer Georgi Gospodinov delivered a speech at the solemn meeting of the BAS on the occasion of the holiday, BNT reported.

On this day last year, the writer won the prestigious international "Booker" for his novel "Time Asylum" and thus pleased the whole of Bulgaria.

Today Gospodinov reminded that words are the most important tool to understand the world, but also the most important part in creating meaning and preventing the collapse of society:

"Our stories, the conversations between us, are the only glue that can bring us back together. As long as people talk, tell and listen to each other, nothing is lost. For me, there is no doubt that this is the best Bulgarian holiday, because we celebrate something as fragile, handmade and non-made as letters and language.

This is not a celebration of arms, it is not a celebration of some glorious victory or defeat, there are no battle scenes, no betrayals, no blood, such as human history is full of. We are happy to have a day to celebrate the bright and everyday wonder of language. Every day, as we speak, we are in the invisible workshop of language, doing invisible work on it. The most lasting thing on our lands will be these 30 or so letters that we carry."
