This was commented by the former ambassador of Bulgaria to the USA, diplomat and former MP Elena Poptodorova before the BNR.
„The more serious problem is not that he carried them out, and Trump's predecessors did, but he is accused of trying to obstruct justice. He makes attempts to hide and destroy them, and there is evidence of his actions”, Poptodorova explained.
She predicted that with the events of the past two days, Trump's guilty plea on all 34 charges against him would be the start of a long legal saga.
„It depends on the case in Florida, there are 34 charges against him. And an effective sentence can be reached, Poptodorova said.
She explained that on July 11, the sentence will be officially announced and “there is some irony in these events, and that is that the conviction of Trump will be the most important event of this presidential campaign, and maybe even all”.
She thinks she will appeal the sentence:
"I have no expectation that this appeal will succeed, there would be no legal reversal. But it's more like there's no official verdict, buying time while the campaign goes on."
„The US justice system is under attack at the moment. Back in the day, Trump as a speaker tried to push the idea and led a campaign to cast doubt on the US electoral system when he challenged the results of previous elections. Now I think the picture is even more alarming. Not only the legitimacy, but also the independence of the US judicial system will be challenged.
And this will be manipulative, because the 12 jurors in the state of New York are selected by lottery, lots,”, Poptodorova explained and recalled that the prosecutor is also in an elected position and “he could not compromise himself” ;.
The former ambassador is adamant that the US system is specifically built this way so that no single power can control the judiciary.
But the US Constitution does not provide for a foreclosure on a convicted person. And according to her, it is unacceptable that a person with questionable moral and legal standing can compete for this highest position.
Regarding the presidential campaign in the USA, Elena Poptodorova commented that the picture is dynamic and from a slight lead of about one percent of Trump over Biden, in recent days polls show 42% for Trump and 43.2% for Biden.
„This shows us how contested the results will be and how narrow the winner will be. Those 5 or 6 states changing their vote will be the ones that make the final result. Nearly 1/3 of Americans said that if Trump were convicted, they would not vote for him, the former diplomat predicted.
Regarding the UN Resolution on Srebrenica, Poptodorova commented:
"My life has been spent in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomacy, even as a member of the National Assembly I have done that. I watch with concern how our diplomatic service is developing, how much professionalism is preserved from external influences. We can regret when people outside the profession and the subject matter – Glavchev, who are empowered to make decisions, the depth of which they cannot even fathom."
