Slavi Vassilev: The majoritarian system or the presidential republic will end the crisis in Bulgaria - 1

One of the ways to look at the resolution of this political crisis is indeed structural changes in our political system. Such a change could be the electoral system, but not in the direction of the Greek model, because that would strengthen the leading political force, which at the given stage is GERB, but rather to go to the one proposed some time ago by "There is such a people". - a majoritarian electoral system, because that would make constituencies a battleground between personalities, rather than a party system, which the proportional electoral system actually is now.

This was stated by political scientist Slavi Vassilev in an interview for "Focus" in connection with the political crisis in our country and the failure of the first mandate to form a government.

Another possible solution is to rethink the functioning of the parliamentary form of government and think about a presidential form. I have been a proponent of this idea for a long, long time, because with the presidential form of government, the responsibility is clear," the political scientist believes.

According to Slavi Vassilev

parliamentarism in our country is highly dependent on the figure of Boyko Borisov.

He explained that this is precisely the reason for the impossibility of getting out of the political crisis. "Parliamentary democracy and the political system cannot turn the page on Borisov." Borisov is still the strongest political figure in the parliament, he is still the most potent political player in Bulgarian politics. But the tensions around him, around his personality and around everything that has caused citizens to protest several times, make him toxic and incompatible for parliamentary democracy to work as it is meant to exist – on the basis of conversation, on the basis of compromise, on the basis of national ideals", commented the analyst.

According to the political scientist, the parliament's inability to function normally is a sign that

"the political elite is incapable of protecting the national interest".

"We are not talking about forming a government. How many bills are ready, they are waiting to be voted on so that the Recovery Plan and a lot of reforms that concern both health care and education – they are there, but they cannot pass the sieve of the National Assembly", he commented.

I think that the given political conjuncture shows the whole society that the political class does not change. People want to see a new person who can embody the national ideals of an independent, sovereign, strong Bulgaria, which will be a member of the European Union and NATO, but protect our interests. The only such person who can actually mark it is the president. This was stated by the political scientist.
