We are on the threshold of the new academic year. With this, the topic of places in the dormitories and whether they are enough comes to the fore. Every year, thousands of students apply for a bed in the university dormitories in the capital, reports the Focus agency.
The University of National and World Economy has about 5,000 places in the dormitories. They are distributed in 20 blocks. This year, however, there will be no students in two of them due to planned renovation works.
The two blocks that will be under renovation have a total of 1069 places. Thus, the number of beds in the dormitories of the UNSS falls by more than 1/5.
For this year alone, there are 1,720 freshmen wishing to be accommodated in dormitories. They can apply according to a total of 11 criteria. The most widespread of them, however, is the criterion related to the student's success.
For this year, the UNSS requires an overall GPA of at least 5.10.
According to the president of the UNSS Student Council, Iliyan Chabukliiski, this is not an inflated criterion, and more than half of the first-year students who applied for a place for this school year have already received one.
"With a success rate of 5.10, we have managed to accommodate 950 students. In terms of success, it sounds very high, but in terms of the number of students, we have managed to rank more than half", Chabukliyski explained.
The total number of all applicants for UNSS dormitories this academic year is 5,700. Due to the planned renovations, however, the places will be around 4,000, and they are already filled. In order to solve this problem, the largest economic university in the country is conducting negotiations on securing places in the dormitories of other universities.
"At the moment, the effort we are making is to find places on the other blocks that are owned by other higher schools in the "Student City" so that we can take places from them and accommodate students. We have done it in past years. UNSS traditionally has a shortage of places, each year there are between 500 and 700. With such talks, we manage to accommodate our colleagues in the dormitories of other universities," said the president of the UNSS Student Council.
"At the beginning of next week, a Commission will be held on the allocation of free places in the student dormitories in the city of Sofia, where we will insist that as many places as possible be allocated to UNSS, so that we can satisfy the wishes of all our colleagues" ;, he also explained.
Iliyan Chabukliyski explained that not only UNSS, but also other universities carry out planned repairs of their dormitories. According to him, talks about allocating additional places this year will be difficult, but he remains optimistic that the situation will be resolved.
"The policy that I, as the president of the Student Council, have insisted on is to be able to satisfy the wishes of every single colleague. It is very important that the student has a place to live, and in good conditions. Therefore repairs are made to these blocks, they have not actually been repaired since their creation, but only cosmetic repairs have been made. Next year, these two blocks will be repaired and students will be able to be accommodated in normal European conditions," assured the president of the UNSS Student Council.
