Residents of the capital's "Lyulin 5" neighborhood are protesting over a dangerous intersection. They claim that they have been waiting for years for it to be fixed and, despite promises, it has not been made safe.
The intersection is located between Pancho Vladigerov Blvd. and Dr. Petar Dertliev Blvd. People say that it is extremely dangerous because there is no traffic light, but there are many pedestrian crossings. A tram also passes by.
„In 2020, the boulevard was connected to the Ring Road, as a result of which it became very busy. Over 1,000 cars pass by per hour," Mariyan Raykov, who lives in the neighborhood, told "This Morning."
In his words, crossing this place is an "extreme sport."
"After the connection with the Ring Road, we started submitting signals to the municipality to make the pedestrian paths safer. The first signal is from 2020, and the answer is that it has been submitted for consideration.
In March 2022. "There is a decision that the construction of a traffic light system at the intersection has been approved," Raykov also said.
Yesterday there was a meeting with representatives of the regional municipality, at which people are confident that a traffic light will be built by March.
„The process requires a construction permit and the entire set of documentation. In this case, the implementation of the project was delayed due to the repeated submission of new instructions by „Sofiyska Voda“ due to their underground infrastructure and the future one, so that it can be taken into account in the best way“, explained Eng. Dimitar Petrov, Director of the „Traffic Management and Analysis“ Directorate at the Sofia Municipality.
The latest instructions are from the beginning of this year, which is why the entire site has been redesigned. In early August, documents were submitted for approval again.
The commitment is to submit the documents to the “Architecture and Urban Planning“ department by mid-October, so that a building permit can be issued and the construction of the traffic light can begin.
Speed limiters will be installed by the end of the day.
