Sociologists: The battle on October 27 is for the return of the state to the hands of the citizens - 1

The battle of the elections on October 27 is about returning the state to the hands of the citizens. For years, society has lived with the understanding and feeling that both the prosecution and the court are under strong political pressure. If they were under someone's influence, that influence would be visible and transparent. Being under someone's invisible influence, however, raises issues of fairness. It is difficult to predict from the present point of view how the events of October 27 would unfold.

This opinion was united in the show “120 minutes” on BTV sociologists Genoveva Petrova from “Alfa Research” and Dobromir Zhivkov from “Market LINKS“.

According to them, the tension in society is rising and they do not rule out large-scale protests in 2025. Dobromir Zhivkov expressed the opinion that people see how partial interests prevail over public ones, and this intolerance of theirs will become visible six months after the elections. And Genoveva Dimitrova explained that the problems are due to the poor functioning of politics in Bulgaria, for which all political parties are to blame.

„It will become clear what exactly and to what extent the DPS voters understood what was happening. At this stage, however, our observations show that a significant part of them live with the feeling that maybe someone is attacking and trying to steal the party with which they have identified for decades, said Genoveva Petrova.

„It is difficult to predict from the current point of view how the events of October 27 would develop. However, we can say at the moment that DPS-Dogan is trying to focus the public's attention on the fact that this faction of Peevski will be the loser in the legal battle. DPS-Dogan is doing everything possible to attract its voters to the political coalition with which it will appear in the elections, added Dobromir Zhivkov.

He recalled that in 2001 there were two NDSVs, and probably in this election there will be three DPSs. According to him, all this drama is related to DPS-Dogan being present as often as possible in the public space, for which their voters recognize them.

„For years, society has lived with the understanding and feeling that both the prosecutor's office and the court are under strong political pressure. If they were under someone's influence, that influence would be visible and transparent. However, being under someone's invisible influence, this creates problems with justice”, Genoveva Petkova also pointed out.

According to her, the events surrounding the DPS of recent weeks do not help to change this feeling among the public. Something more – it even opened additional occasions for asking more questions about the justice of the decisions taken by the institutions.

„I think that what is happening will make people insecure and most of them will not come out to exercise their right to vote. This has already become a trend. We know how the elections went in June – we reported a dismal record of voter turnout, or rather the lack thereof. The disenfranchisement of Bulgarian society is the energy and food with which the conquered country is fed. These are the mechanisms of the captured state”, pointed out Dobromir Zhivkov.

According to him “if the Bulgarian citizens are in a calm state and are not stressed by the next elections, they will admit during the polls that justice is not for everyone, that they are distrustful and do not believe in the institutions and parliamentary democracy”.
