Kristalina Georgieva: Bulgaria must deal with inflation by the end of the year - 1

Bulgaria still has a chance to entered the Eurozone the following year.

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, commented on this for BNT in her first television interview after the start of her second term. According to her words, quoted by FOCUS, the country must deal with inflation by the end of the year, as the only currently uncovered criteria for adopting the single European currency.

"At the fund, we believe that the chance for Bulgaria to enter the eurozone in 2025 remains, the question is therefore how to solve the last task, the task of bringing down inflation.

According to Georgieva, it is also important how the communication with the European institutions will be carried out, so that the specific plan for adopting the euro can be implemented successfully. The managing director of the IMF reminded why it is important to become a member of the Eurozone.

"In a world that is more susceptible to shocks, they happen more often, more unexpectedly, having additional protection as a member of the Eurozone is in the interest of the Bulgarians.

The IMF's forecasts are for low growth of the global economy and for a technologically lagging Europe. The old continent must focus on reforms that will support the rapid digitization and modernization of the conservative financial system.

"For us this topic, structural reforms that can support dynamic growth are extremely important both in developed countries and in the developing world".

Kristalina Georgieva also commented on the criticism received at the end of her first mandate that the IMF supports the Russian Federation with expertise and monitoring by evaluating the country's economy.

"There is no mission in Russia. As for the economic consultations with Russia, this is the responsibility of the fund. We have the responsibility to assess the economic situation in all member countries," she said.

"We have no intention of being a factor in making the war more brutal.

The IMF will continue with its monetary support for Ukraine, as the program aimed at Kiev reaches 16 billion dollars.
