„When you want immunity for a politician at a certain moment, you owe an explanation”. This is what former interior minister Ivan Demerzhiev said on the air of "Your Day" on the occasion of the requested immunity of the co-chairman of PP-DB Kiril Petkov from i.f. chief prosecutor Borislav Sarafov. According to Demerdzhiev, Sarafov must explain why he requested Petkov's immunity right now.
The former minister clarified that the exercise of power must be within the framework of the law. “A Prime Minister does not have the authority to request an arrest. Senior officials in the Ministry of the Interior have such powers. They cannot make a decision under pressure, they must follow the law. If they are not, it is very interesting what happens to them, have decisions been made, if not – why”, Demerdzhiev also commented.
He clarified that after the court ruled that the arrest of Borisov, Goranov and Arnaudova was illegal, responsibility for this “immediate arrest” must be borne. “Is only one person responsible for this arrest? Where are the others?”, the lawyer asked.
„ The Prosecutor's Office cannot behave like a state within a state that does not owe an explanation to anyone. When he undertakes such actions, the chief prosecutor must explain why they are necessary”, Demerdzhiev also said.
In his words, Sarafov owes answers to many other questions as well – where is Pepi Euroto, who killed Martin Bojanov-Notary, no one clarified the circle of magistrates included in the two circles. “Without untying these knots in the judicial system, one cannot move forward. Instead, we are observing that new knots are being tied,” said the former interior minister.
Regarding the lack of invitation to “DPS - New beginning” for consultations with the President Rumen Radev Demerdzhiev said that the head of state has for many years shown a straightforward observance of the Constitution. “I do not remember a single moment in which he exceeded his powers and did not comply with the basic law”, the lawyer said.
He is disturbed by what is happening in the Middle East. The former interior minister asked why, after other European countries stopped accepting asylum applications from citizens of Syria, the rulers here did nothing. “I am also worried about the war in Ukraine”, said Demerdzhiev.
