Renovation of the "Tower" border checkpoint has begun in connection with our upcoming entry into Schengen from January 1.
The goal is to create two lanes in each direction before the checkpoint. Lanes are being widened for 200 meters immediately before the checkpoint on both sides.
But the new lane will be only one - in the direction of Bulgaria, since there were two lanes of traffic in the direction of Greece until now.
The expansion is at the expense of sidewalks and green areas, no commercial buildings have been demolished.
The repair is expected to be completed by December 31 and to ensure a smoother passage for all cars after we enter Schengen.
Before this 200-meter zone immediately after the checkpoint in the direction of Bulgaria, there is still about 2 kilometers before the highway, where there is only one lane.
There is also a widening and construction of two lanes there. For this purpose, the RIA announced a public procurement two months ago.
Until the completion of the repair work, traffic in the area of the checkpoint is regulated by employees of the Regional Road Administration. Drivers should drive with caution.
