A pileup involving eight cars occurred this morning on the road between Yambol and the nearby village of Kukorevo.
No injuries, minor damage to the cars.
The road section is open to traffic, traffic is being regulated by traffic police, Tatyana Pavlova, the spokesperson for the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs - Yambol, told BTA.
The accident occurred in foggy conditions and sub-zero temperatures.
The section is part of the national road network. The road was treated with a mixture of sand and salt, Galin Kostov, the director of the Regional Road Administration (RDA), told BTA, citing information from the company involved in road maintenance in the Yambol region. According to Kostov, there were two accidents, but in the same section. The cars that collided were on the side or outside the traffic lane. The damage was material - broken headlights, crushed bumpers, he added.
The accident occurred in a section where the permitted speed of 90 km/h enters the borders of Yambol and the speed limit is now 50 km/h. It is possible that the first car had sharply reduced its speed and, in the absence of sufficient distance in fog, the others behind it had crashed one after the other, the director of the regional road department also indicated.
Every morning, the road maintenance company processes the most risky sections. There are 10 vehicles on the ground, spreading a mixture of salt and sand in a ratio of 2:1, Kostov indicated. Priority is being given to work on the entrance and exit arteries of Yambol and the ring roads. Other sections of the republican road network in the region, which are in more fertile places, are also being worked on, the director of the OPU - Yambol added.
Repair of the railway overpass at the western entrance to Yambol began yesterday. Traffic has been completely shifted to the Bypass "North". The institutions are calling on drivers to drive carefully, especially in difficult winter conditions.
