Meteo Balkans: Is it spring? A rare anomaly brings back cold and blizzards

Winter may remind itself in the period 1-3 April

Winter may remind itself in the period 1-3 April, according to new data from Meteo Balkans forecasters.

The polar vortex appears to be highly unstable. Distinct warming zones are visible in the stratosphere (anomalies with positive temperatures in red and brown) over Europe and North America, which usually leads to the weakening or disintegration of the vortex.

Significant warming is observed, especially over Northern Europe, with a strongly displaced and even fragmented vortex. This may lead to further breaking up of the vortex and potentially cause cold invasions in the lower layers of the atmosphere in the coming weeks, meteorologists also note.

The global GFS model “catches“ this signal for the disintegration of the polar vortex, with snowfall expected in the period 1-3 April. The reason is a probable cyclone and the associated precipitation.

Before the "expected cooling" comes the turn of precipitation from rain and snow and thunderstorms in the period 25-31 March 2025.

In the period 23-25 March, our country and the Balkan Peninsula will gradually fall under the influence of a deep baric valley located over Central Europe. By the end of the month, the baric formation will determine the rainy and relatively cooler weather in our country. Relatively warmer air will be carried through our country before the cold snap, and the southerly wind north of the mountains will raise temperatures by March 23-24.

Then, weak atmospheric disturbances will pass through the peninsula, including Bulgaria, which is why rain is expected in isolated places - mainly in mountainous areas. Thunderstorms are also possible.

A more serious change is expected after March 25, when our country will fall under the influence of a series of Mediterranean cyclones. By the end of the month, about two or three cyclones will pass through the peninsula, which will lead to rainy weather with thunderstorm activity.

Due to the low temperatures at altitude, the formation of ice-phase precipitation, such as sleet or even hail, is possible. Above 1900-2000 meters above sea level, precipitation will be snow.
