The debate on the referendum is positive, although it is hard for me to imagine that there will be such a referendum. This was commented on in "The Day Begins" by former MEP from the BSP Petar Vitanov.
"This is an attempt to awaken the debate on readiness. Unfortunately, however, it enters a super-elementary channel - of stigmatization, of ideologizing, of replacing the real issue. This debate would provide an opportunity to identify the camps and political figures who will bear responsibility, and it would make it possible to compensate for the lack of an information campaign for the euro," Vitanov pointed out.
He stated that he had always been pro-European, although he also had his concerns about adopting the euro.
"I assume that the state should be given two or three months of tolerance to propose exactly those economic measures that would compensate for the potential negative effects. The presidential institution is the most legitimate, it enjoys the greatest trust from the people, and this is an issue that definitely worries people," the former MEP also said.
According to Petar Vitanov, the decision to join the eurozone is entirely political: "We are on the verge of meeting the criteria, we cannot convince people that there is no inflation, but let's say that somehow it appears on the documents. I do not believe that the debate here can prevent the EU Council from making a decision on behalf of Bulgarian citizens.
In his words, "Euro-uncriticalness causes more damage to the euro than Euroscepticism", because all the negatives are transferred to the currency. Petar Vitanov believes that there are objective and subjective reasons for some goods to become more expensive after the adoption of the euro and the role of the state is to prevent this.
