Vessela Cherneva: Eurozone countries may stop us for the euro - 1

President Radev articulates his ambitions, it is not bad for political players like him to have their positions, but they must be expressed when the time is right and in accordance with the laws of the country. This was shared on NOVA NEWS by the Deputy Director of the European Council on Foreign Policy, Vessela Cherneva.

She explained that the convergence reports that we expect next month from the European Commission and the European Central Bank reflect only Bulgaria's technical readiness to adopt the euro, but the final decision on the matter must be made by the member states in the eurozone.

Here the big question mark refers to the member states, which must make the final decision. If they consider that there are factors in Bulgaria that could undermine this consensus on joining the eurozone, then they may hesitate, she added.

When asked whether this means that - similar to our accession to Schengen - some country could veto us and prevent us from joining the eurozone, Cherneva answered in the affirmative: “There are countries in the eurozone that could use such a disagreement and point it out as an argument for postponing Bulgaria's membership in the eurozone, which would mean a risk to the adoption of the euro in general“.

On the topic of the upcoming meeting between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, Vesela Cherneva expressed doubt that the Russian president would go to the negotiations.

Putin does not want to participate in these negotiations, so I deeply doubt that he will go to the meeting in Istanbul. Putin has no reason at the moment to agree to the US proposals, unless it leads to greater sanctions. And sanctions are the only more serious condition that would force Putin to sit at the negotiating table, but coordination with Washington must be sought, Cherneva explained.
