Prof. Yanaki Stoilov: Bulgarians are not a herd, and the eurozone is not a pen into which they must be put - 1

The Constitutional Court has considered such a problem and last year ruled on another issue that was considered by the National Assembly by virtue of a petition supported by several hundred thousand Bulgarian citizens. This problem has many dimensions. Then the Constitutional Court adopted a decision that a referendum cannot be held on the question thus posed. This was stated by Constitutional Judge Prof. Yanaki Stoilov in „More from the Day” on BNT regarding President Radev's proposed referendum on the euro, quoted by novini.bg.

The legal force currently has the decision that the Constitutional Court has pronounced. We must also bear in mind that this is also the dispute over the new question, since the treaty does not explicitly state a deadline for the countries that have agreed to join the eurozone to do so, the constitutionalist pointed out.
Bulgarian citizens cannot be considered as a herd, because the eurozone is not a pen into which they must be brought. No country in the EU has been forced to be included in the eurozone if it has not taken this step itself. This is a situation that should not be speculated about, he explained.

I want to emphasize that the eurozone is not the same at the time of Bulgaria's accession to the EU. The financial and economic situation has changed compared to the one we are talking about, said Yanaki Stoilov and gave as an example countries that have a debt that exceeds their gross domestic product. Even the ECB has reported losses for the second year. Last year alone, they amounted to 8 billion dollars.

This raises a number of questions, such as whether, along with the advantages, we will not face a deterioration of the situation. Those countries that are already in the eurozone may no longer comply with the requirements to the same extent, the constitutional judge fears. He warned that some of the rights of countries that continue to fail to meet the conditions they themselves have accepted may be frozen.
