The National Council of the BSP today supported the decision not to hold a referendum because it is unconstitutional, the youngest MP and chairman of the party's youth organization Gabriel Valkov told BNT.

"The National Council was almost unanimous. Many opinions were heard. The opinion of both the Plovdiv organization and the Varna organization was heard. You know, there has always been democracy in the BSP. And there have always been different opinions from different organizations. In a mass party with structures throughout the country, there is no way that we can all have the same opinion on every topic and this is normal. The National Council held, perhaps, a 3-4 hour discussion on the topic - both with the referendum and with the positions of the BSP. This is the position taken by the Executive Bureau of the party, together with the coalition council of the party. Do not hold a referendum, because it is unconstitutional," Valkov pointed out.

The MP emphasized that such a referendum would tarnish Bulgaria.

"There is no way they will take us seriously in the EU when we hold a referendum every year and amend international treaties that we have signed."

"That is why we must maintain a line of conduct that we as a party have been holding for years. Back in 1995, the BSP and the government of Zhan Videnov submitted Bulgaria's documents for membership in the European Union. After that, President Parvanov, also elected by the BSP, as you know, maintained quite balanced international relations and good relations with Europe, so that in 2005 he could sign a decree ratifying Bulgaria's entry into the European Union. Therefore, in 2007, after the government of Sergey Stanishev signed the treaty for accession to the European Union. That is, this is a long-term policy of the BSP, in which we work well with Europe and it has been proven over the years."

Vulkov said that he expects a positive report on Bulgaria's readiness to enter the eurozone.

"After the report is released, I hope the report will be positive, so that this integration of Bulgaria into the European Union can be completed and it is again in a government in which the BSP participates, that is exactly where the moment comes when we are in government - to impose some price regulations, for example. That is why we introduced this bill on markups. And at the moment markups in supermarkets are too high. Such bills must be imposed. They are included, by the way, in the management program that the government adopted and it is also written in it about markups, because the market in Bulgaria must be regulated when entering Europe. That's what other countries do."
