The Union of Judges in Bulgaria sharply criticized the behavior of the acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov during the plenum of the Supreme Judicial Council, held on May 29. The reason for the reaction is Sarafov's refusal to answer questions from members of the council, including judge Atanaska Disheva, as well as unfounded accusations against her of political bias, news.bg reports.
In its official position, the Union emphasizes that such a refusal is unacceptable and violates the spirit of the Constitution, according to which the Prosecutor General is obliged to present and defend the annual report on the activities of the prosecution and investigative bodies before the SJC Plenum. It is noted that the Plenum includes all members of the council and has the authority to hear and evaluate such reports.
According to the judges, the attack on Judge Disheva is not only a personal attack, but also a display of disrespect for the judicial community, which elected her through direct elections as a representative in the SJC. The Union regrets that the remaining members of the council have not raised fundamental questions about the leadership of the prosecutor's office, which, in their opinion, leaves important topics without a public and institutional response.
The criticism of Sarafov comes against the backdrop of ongoing debates about the accountability and role of the prosecutor's office in the judicial system, as well as the transparency of its activities.
