In two large retail chains, prices are announced in both leva and euro, and in two other chains - on the fiscal receipt, the purchase is converted into euros. This was stated in "This Morning" on bTV by the executive director of the Association for Modern Trade Nikolay Valkanov. According to him, it is normal for consumers to be confused at first, especially among the elderly.
“I have noticed that people rarely look at what they are buying, we just have to look carefully - the lower price is the one in euros. There is also this logic that people consider this price to be promotional“, he added.
In his words, a "cheap deal" is being sought with the seasonal price hike. He commented that placing digital labels facilitates the process and eliminates the factor of “human error“.
According to him, the Association for Modern Trade has signed a memorandum with the Bulgarian National Bank, and a similar document is about to be signed with the government. He explained that with this document they are obliged to comply with the law, employees will be trained in advance so that the process goes smoothly.
“In order for the price to increase, fuel or electricity must become more expensive, wages must increase - these are circumstances that do not depend on the trader. No one should abuse this moment, neither the milk producer nor the provider of a given service“, explained Valkanov.
According to him, the most difficult period for stores will be at the beginning of 2026, when it will be possible to pay in both leva and euros.
