Omurtag Municipality will implement a large-scale project to build a system for separate collection and utilization of biodegradable waste. The initiative also covers the municipalities of Kotel, Varbitsa and Antonovo, with the goal of creating a sustainable mechanism for environmental protection through modern waste management.
The project includes the construction of a composting plant based on the innovative technology "rotating drum bioreactor", with a minimum annual capacity of over 2,800 tons. For effective separate collection, 468 containers with a capacity of 1.1 cubic meters will be delivered and placed in all settlements within the scope of the Regional Waste Management System – Omurtag region.
The new infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce the amount of waste being landfilled, which will extend the operational life of the regional landfill and improve the quality of the environment. The project also has an important social effect - providing a new type of waste management service for residents, businesses and institutions in the four municipalities.
The initiative is being implemented under the “Environment“ 2021-2027 Program, within the “Waste“ priority. The implementation period of the activities is 30 months.
