New York police said the shooting took place near the historic "Stonewall Inn" hotel in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, where the gay rights movement began with an anti-police demonstration in June 1969, The Guardian reported.
Police said both victims – girls aged 16 and 17 – were shot shortly after 10 p.m. and taken to Bellevue Hospital in New York City. One of them is in critical condition after being shot in the head. The other was shot in the leg but is in stable condition. According to CBS News, the suspect has not been identified.
The shootings took place in Sheridan Square, which was packed with partygoers. According to reports, the daytime festivities were peaceful, but as night fell, the crowd of partygoers became increasingly noisy and uncontrollable.
