The People's Representative from „Vazrazhdane“ Yordan Todorov sent a written question to the Minister of Energy, signaling serious discrepancies and deliberate concealment of the real state of key equipment at the „Kozloduy“ NPP.
This concerns the electric motors of the main circulation pumps (GCPs) used in the 5th and 6th power units of the plant - equipment that is essential for nuclear safety.
The official responses from the Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) and the NPP “Kozloduy“ to the MP contain misleading information that does not correspond to the actual technical condition. They claim that all 10 electric motors - 4 per unit and 2 spare - are operational and have an extended service life, which is categorically not true.
“I am describing the brazen way in which the NRA and the “Kozloduy“ NPP provide misleading information about the condition of equipment on which our nuclear safety depends. And they are lying to me because they do not know that I have real documents signed by the plant itself in 2023 and 2024“, points out Yordan Todorov.
In his letter to the Minister of Energy, Todorov sets out facts in detail and cites specific internal protocols from the “Kozloduy“ NPP. Documents signed by Deputy Executive Director Andrey Krasnocharov, prove that the spare electric motors with numbers 23301 and 26012 have been found to have serious technical defects. Attempts to repair them in Romania and Bulgaria have been unsuccessful.
„The „Kozloduy“ NPP practically does not have spare electric motors for the GCP. This means that in the event of a failure of one of the operating ones, the unit must be shut down. As the most serious consequences in the safety analyses, jamming of the GCP is even considered as a scenario that could lead to the melting of the core.“, emphasizes Todorov.
„What is claimed in the official response from the NRA is unacceptable. When it comes to nuclear safety, there is no room for lies, concealment and protectionism. Such behavior is a threat to the national security of our country“, he further states Todorov.
Yordan Todorov announced that he is preparing an official report to the National Security Agency, since the case is far from being limited to an administrative violation. This is a systematic and purposeful concealment of information, which can endanger people's lives and health.
The MP demands a full investigation into the actions of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, the management of the Kozloduy NPP, as well as the establishment of any possible interference by political or economic interests behind this manipulation.
