Democracy is not defended only at protests – it is defended every day.
Today I do not have the opportunity to be physically at the protest of “Justice for Everyone“ – against the pressure on political opponents and the abuse of institutions as bludgeons of power.
The reason for my absence is participation in a leadership program in the United States – Bloomberg Harvard – one of the best programs for mayors and their teams. This is a valuable opportunity for cities that want to lead with good practices, innovations and sustainable solutions for the benefit of their citizens.
This was posted on his Facebook page by the mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev. Here is more from his comment:
But it is not the presence of one person that makes a society awake.
The true defense of democracy happens every day – through words, through actions, through refusing to remain silent when there is abuse of power.
I believe that Sofia must remain a free, democratic and solidary city – in which institutions serve the people, not against them. And that the responsibility for this lies with all of us – not only in protest, but with every decision we make.
