Miroslav Nenkov: In many places, the attitude towards residents is like slaves - 1

“Young doctors who start their professional path, everywhere this beginning is very difficult. It is associated with an awful lot of work, an awful lot of workload and “being knocked down“ by the reality of the hospital they end up in“, commented in “Face to Face“ former Minister of Health Dr. Miroslav Nenkov.

According to him, it is very important which boss the resident will end up with. In some cases, they may only be used as “draft cattle“ – to push for shifts, to write documents, and not to study.

„Even postgraduates are not allowed to attend the courses that are in the specialization program, because there is no one to give shifts. If the postgraduate goes to a course for two months, there will be no one to push for shifts for two months“, said Nenkov.

Regarding my remuneration, he commented that the postgraduate cannot be expected to receive a huge salary.

„However, the fact is that the attitude towards them in many places is exactly like that towards slaves. They are there to push for shifts. The financial resources are distributed, and they are left with the crumbs. That is actually why the children jump“, said Miroslav Nenkov.
