Political scientists: With the move against the CPC, Peevski positions himself at the center of power - 1

Delyan Peevski's statement that the Anti-Corruption Commission should be closed caused a strong political response and opened a new line of tension in the ruling structure.

Political scientist Assoc. Prof. Tatyana Burudzhieva commented on the air of “Hello, Bulgaria” on “Nova TV” that with this position, Peevski is “centering” and making everyone else realign towards him.

”He reminds me of Borisov - he enters the situation, dominates it and derives benefits. This does a good job for GERB and the government“, she says.

According to her, Peevski is coming out with this position against the backdrop of accusations that he controls all institutions. That is precisely why, Burudzhieva suggests, he is pushing for the closure of the CPC – to demonstrate that he does not hold the levers in it.

Political scientist Teodor Slavev is adamant that Peevski's move is “clear and transparent“ – an attempt to differentiate himself from the ongoing civil protests.

“The CPC is not the only institution that can be used as a truncheon. The main focus should be on the prosecutor's office, where the situation remains pending, he emphasizes.

Slavev assumes that Peevski will not support a new composition of the commission, which would leave the current head Anton Slavchev in office and make the situation similar to that in the prosecutor's office.

Slavev also questions the legitimacy and realism of the idea of closing the CPC with a quick parliamentary vote.

“You cannot close a state body in a week. Such a vote should not even be allowed“, he believes.

The political scientist also commented on Boyko Borisov. According to him, if Borisov goes to the presidential elections with the “Zhelyazkov” cabinet, it is very likely that he will lose them, even if he is supported by Peevski.
