Over 56,720 sq m of sidewalks have been renovated on the territory of the Sofia Municipality this year by the end of July. The activities have been implemented under the sidewalk repair program, and the work continues intensively.
Complete repairs have been carried out on existing sidewalks, with new unipavement and/or asphalt concrete pavements being laid. The total area of the renovated pavements is approximately the same as that of 7 standard football fields. Along with the renovation of the sidewalks, an accessible environment, lowering of curbs (where possible), as well as guiding and tactile strips are being implemented.
The activities to renovate pedestrian spaces have not been completed, and so far the most repairs have been made in the districts of Iskar (7670 sq m), Poduyane (7183 sq m), Vrabnitsa (5193 sq m), Nadezhda (3182 sq m).
The renovation of sidewalks is carried out as a priority next to public socially significant buildings, kindergartens and nurseries, schools, clinics, hospitals, parks and public transport stops. At the proposals of the district mayors, repairs of block-wide spaces have also been planned in combination with other financing mechanisms developed by the Sofia Municipality. The financing for each district is distributed depending on the area of the sidewalks and the number of its residents.
