It is not possible to change the agreed European consensus or any of its components. Bulgaria expects the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM) to implement its commitments in good faith, which the European Council itself has repeatedly insisted on. This was written in a letter to the foreign ministers of the European Union by Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
In the letter, Minister Georgiev informed his colleagues from the EU member states, as well as European institutions, about Skopje's latest attempts to compromise important elements of the European consensus.
Bulgaria expresses growing concern about the continued failure of the Republic of North Macedonia to fulfill its commitments to the EU, Georgiev wrote.
The package agreement approved in July 2022 at the European level remains the only possible path forward for this EU candidate country. Unfortunately, instead of constructive dialogue and good neighborly relations, we observe a policy of confrontation, provocations and retreat from the obligations undertaken, including the targeted challenge of key agreements before the Constitutional Court in Skopje, the letter further states.
We remain of the position that the best solution for the future of the Western Balkans is the participation of all countries in this most successful project called the European Union. We are also ready to help Skopje to follow its European path in the reform process, in the event that membership in the United Europe is the actual choice of its government, the Foreign Minister points out.
The Republic of North Macedonia will not make changes to its constitution unless the European Union provides guarantees that this is the last condition before the country, he told “Politico“ Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia Timcho Mucunski during his visit to Brussels.
"Our fear is: if we make them (the changes to the constitution), what will happen if in six months Bulgaria again raises demands on us on issues such as history, identity and language?", Mucunski stated in the interview.
