Seven major archaeological sites receive state funding for research this year. Among them are Heraclea Sintica, Ratsiaria, the salt pans near Provadia and the medieval fortress of Rusokastro.

The allocated amount exceeds one million and 400,000 euros. The list of priority sites also includes the sacred city of the Thracians Perperikon. Excavations there begin in June and will last 4 months.

Archaeologists are categorical that one human life is not enough to study Perperikon. Work there began 25 years ago and still more than half of the territory of the complex is untouched. Every summer, scientists uncover small fragments of life there, which stretches back seven thousand years in time, writes BNR.

Perperikon is divided into three parts - the Acropolis, the Southern and Northern Quarters. In the first part, excavations have been completed, and the southern suburbs have been studied for several years. The northern part will remain for some time in the future, said Professor Nikolay Ovcharov.

He has been the head of the Perperikon scientific expedition since its very beginning - for over two decades. Even then, the archaeologist expressed the hypothesis that the city was created for its sanctuaries and the nearby gold mines.

It is difficult to count the number of tourists who have visited Perperikon over the years. Some of them also stop by the historical museum in Kardzhali, where the most impressive exhibition about the rock city is arranged, said the museum's director Milen Kamarev.

Archaeological excavations and new discoveries are the basis of the tourist boom in our country, believes Professor Nikolay Ovcharov.

The next archaeological summer at Perperikon will begin in June with 60 workers from nearby villages. The studies will again be in the southern quarter of the rock city.
