Alicia Silverstone at 50: The "Clueless" returns - 1

Alicia Silverstone turns 50 today, October 4. The American actress, who became one of the symbols of pop culture in the 90s thanks to her role as Cher Horowitz in “Clueless“ (Clueless), celebrates the anniversary at a particularly interesting moment in her career – more than three decades after the original film, she is preparing to reprise her most famous role.

Silverstone was born on October 4, 1976 in San Francisco, California. She began working as a model as a child, and her first television appearances came in the early 1990s.

Her big break was the thriller “The Crush“ (The Crush) from 1993. The role of obsessed teenager Adrian Forrest attracted attention to the young actress and earned her an MTV Breakthrough Award.

The Girl from the Aerosmith Videos

Before becoming Cher Horowitz, Alicia Silverstone was already a well-known face of the MTV generation.

She appeared in Aerosmith's music videos for “Cryin'“, “Amazing“ and “Crazy“. The latter, in which she starred with Liv Tyler, became one of the iconic rock videos of the decade.

The young actress became so recognizable from the band's videos that the media began calling her the "Aerosmith girl."

But true world fame was yet to come.

„Barovki“ made her an icon

In 1995, „Barovki“ by director Amy Heckerling was released in theaters. Silverstone is Cher Horowitz – a rich, self-confident and fashion-obsessed schoolgirl from Beverly Hills, who is convinced that she can arrange not only her own life, but also that of everyone around her.

The film is loosely inspired by the novel “Emma“ by Jane Austen, but transfers the story to the world of American teenagers of the 90s.

“Barovki“ gradually acquires cult status, and Cher's yellow plaid suit becomes one of the most recognizable looks in the history of teen cinema.

The film turns the 18-year-old Silverstone into an international celebrity and fashion icon.

From Batgirl to independent cinema

After the huge success of “Barovki“, expectations for the young star are huge. In 1997, she was cast as Barbara Wilson/Batgirl in Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin.

However, the film was met with extremely negative reviews from critics. Silverstone herself found herself under intense media pressure, including comments about her appearance and weight – a period she later described as a particularly unpleasant phase of her early career.

Instead of disappearing after the first wave of fame, the actress gradually chose more diverse projects in film, television and theater.

Over the years, she has participated in productions such as “Blast from the Past“, “Beauty Shop“, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer“, “The Lodge“, “Reptile“, “Y2K“ and “Bugonia“.

Life outside Hollywood

Outside the cinema, Silverstone has been known for years for her interest in an ecological lifestyle and animal protection. She follows a vegan diet and in 2009 published the book The Kind Diet, and later The Kind Mama.

The actress has a son – Bear Blue, born in 2011. Her relationship with musician Christopher Jarecki ended after a long marriage, with their divorce being finalized in 2018.

In contrast to the spoiled Cher image that made her famous, in her personal life, Silverstone has for years promoted a simpler and more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

At 50, Cher Horowitz becomes the same

Alicia Silverstone's anniversary coincides with news that could hardly be more symbolic for her career.

Paramount+ officially announced in July 2026 that it had given the green light for a sequel to “Barovki“ in the form of a limited series. Silverstone will return as Cher Horowitz and will serve as executive producer.

The story will take place more than 30 years after the original film.

Cher is now a successful businesswoman and mother, convinced that she is doing great in life. However, things change when her own daughter reaches high school age and Cher discovers that raising a teenager can once again make her feel completely “clueless“.

Especially important for fans of the original is the return of the film's creator Amy Heckerling as an executive producer. Among the writers are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known from “Gossip Girl“ and “Orange County“.

Filming is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles in 2027.

Half a Century and a Role That Never Gets Old

At 50, Alicia Silverstone finds herself in an unusual position - she's never stopped working, but her most famous character is still the girl she played when she was just 18.

Three decades later, Cher Horowitz will no longer be the Beverly Hills schoolgirl with the computer-organized wardrobe. She'll be the mother of a teenager.

And for Silverstone, her 50th birthday is less a cause for nostalgia than the beginning of an interesting new chapter. After more than 30 years, Hollywood is once again returning to the girl in the yellow plaid suit. Only this time, Cher has grown up with her audience.
