At least five people in southern Pakistan could be sentenced to up to five years in prison for mutilating a camel, it was reported today the local authorities, quoted by DPA and BTA.
The incident took place in the Sanghar district of Sindh province on Friday when the camel's owner cut off its right leg because it was grazing in his fields. The other four men are accused of being his accomplices in the crime.
The brutal violence against the animal caused a wide response on social networks, which forced the local authorities to take action.
„The culprits are in custody, have confessed to the crime and face up to five years in prison,” said Sanghar police spokesman Mugharab Khan.
The 8-month-old animal is now being cared for by an animal protection organization in the provincial capital – Karachi.
Junaid Nazir of the animal shelter “Comprehensive Disaster Response Services” reported that a Pakistani company had been ordered to produce a prosthesis for the camel.
