Why do people go under the table on Good Friday - 1

Good Friday, also known as Good Friday, is the saddest day of the year. It is the day when the Christian world bows its head before the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ – the day when the Son of God takes upon himself the sins of humanity in the name of love, forgiveness and eternal life.

According to tradition, no household chores are done on Good Friday – no work, no sewing, no washing. It is believed that the earth on this day is “black“ because it has absorbed the blood of the Savior. The day is loaded with deep symbolism, and its silence and sorrow are felt not only in the churches, but also in the hearts of the faithful.

The evening service of Good Friday is among the most moving and solemn in the Orthodox tradition. At its center is the bringing out of the shroud - a canvas with an icon depicting the laying of Christ in the tomb. It is placed on a table symbolizing the Holy Sepulcher, and surrounded by flowers - an expression of love, adoration and deep sorrow.

The faithful approach this peculiar altar, passing under the table, on their knees or with a humble bow. Then they bow and kiss the shroud - an act that combines ritual, faith and deep spirituality.

The tradition of passing under the table on Good Friday is not just a religious custom - it is a deeply symbolic act that unites the three most essential aspects of the Christian faith:

  • Veneration before the Holy Sepulcher – a sign of empathy with the suffering and sacrifice of Christ.
  • Repentance and spiritual purification – an act of humility in which the believer realizes his sins and seeks forgiveness.
  • Hope for resurrection – a symbolic passage through the grave to the light and new life that the Resurrection brings.

Traditions and folk faith: when the ritual meets the heart of the people

The Bulgarian people have woven their own beliefs into this rite, giving it an even deeper and more personal meaning. In folk Christianity, passing under the table is not only a form of worship, but also a request for health, protection, and blessing.

  • It is believed that if a person passes under the table with pure faith, they will be healthy throughout the year.
  • The ritual is performed three times - in honor of the Holy Trinity.
  • Mothers often pass under the table with their children, offering prayers for their life and well-being.
  • The threads or cloths placed on the shroud are worn throughout the year as an amulet for protection and strength.
