Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović has extended an official invitation to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to visit the country on the occasion of the upcoming 20th anniversary of Montenegro's membership in the organization, MINA reported. The invitation was made during their meeting late last night on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Montenegrin presidential administration announced, BTA reports.

Milatović emphasized that the meeting was an opportunity to personally express his support for Guterres' initiatives related to the reform of the UN system.

“The organization is facing great challenges and reform is necessary to be ready to meet future challenges“, he said.

According to him, Montenegro remains firmly committed to multilateralism, dialogue and building bridges between countries. The president thanked the Secretary-General for the support that various UN programs provide in the field of economic development and democratic strengthening.

Milatović recalled that next year the country will celebrate an anniversary, 20 years of membership in the UN, and stressed the importance of such messages from a small but committed country. He emphasized the main goal of Montenegro's foreign policy - joining the European Union by 2028:

“The doors are open for us. It is up to us to implement the reforms. The ball is in our court“, Milatović said.

The president called on all political forces in the country to unite around the European path, defining it as a key idea that must transcend divisions.
