NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte insisted that the Alliance must "protect its skies" from any infiltration.
He made his statement after Russian military aircraft recently entered the airspace of some member states.
Before meeting with representatives of the European Commission, along with its president Ursula von der Leyen, Rutte indicated that NATO was "still analyzing what happened in Denmark" after several drones were detected there.
The NATO secretary general praised the ability of the European Union, as a single market, to create a joint defense scheme and ensure that "money and assets are available to support Ukraine" as it tries to repel Russia's military operation. He also stressed that Ukraine is "our fierce line of defense" of "our collective security".
In turn, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the bloc should take "immediate action" to create a "drone wall" as part of monitoring its eastern flank in response to drone incursions from Russia.
She also called for increased military aid to Ukraine, as the country is Europe"s "first line of defense" against Moscow. In her words, a "more structural solution" is needed to support Kiev. Von der Leyen proposed a reparations loan based on frozen Russian assets. According to her, part of such a loan should be directed to financing European defense.
The European Commission President also noted that the defense industry must be strengthened and deliver "state-of-the-art" military equipment quickly and at scale.
