Taiwan has rejected Washington's offer to start producing 50% of its semiconductors in the US, AFP reported. The agency quoted Taiwan's chief negotiator on Trump's tariffs as saying.
"I want to make it clear that this is a US idea. Our negotiating team has never committed to a 50-50 split in chip production". Taiwan's Vice Premier Chen Li-chiu told reporters upon his return to Taipei on Wednesday.
"You can be sure that this time we have not discussed this issue and we will not agree to such a condition," Chen Li-chiu stressed.
Just a month ago, Donald Trump threatened that the United States intended to impose 100 percent tariffs on imports of microchips and semiconductors.
Trump limits the sale of chips to Malaysia and Thailand
Direct exports of these products to China are now de facto banned.
Trump has stepped up his efforts to pressure businesses to manufacture their products in the United States.
