Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa said yesterday that he was the victim of an attempted poisoning with chocolates and jam obtained during a public event. According to him, the products contained three chemicals, reports Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.
This is the second report of an assassination attempt against President Noboa filed by the government, amid intense protests by indigenous people against his policies.
"The presence of these three chemical compounds in high concentrations cannot be accidental," Noboa said in an interview with CNN. The military service responsible for his security has filed a report with the prosecutor's office.
"We filed a report, we presented the evidence – the concentration of the three chemicals in the candy," the president added.
Previous incidents
Earlier this month, the government announced that Noboa's car had been the target of a shooting attributed to indigenous people, which was also classified as an attempted murder.
Indigenous protests have blocked roads in several provinces since mid-September. The demonstrations were organized by the country's largest indigenous organization, Conaie, which opposes the removal of a diesel fuel subsidy.
A referendum is scheduled for November 16 in the country, through which Noboa hopes to push through more radical changes to the constitution related to the fight against drug trafficking.
