Four migrants have died after their boat sank off the Greek island of Lesbos, the Greek coast guard said. Seven people have been rescued from the sea, and the search operation is ongoing, reports "Reuters", quoted by News.bg.
"We have found four bodies, the rescue operation is ongoing. It is not yet clear how many people were on the boat," a coast guard official said, quoted by the agency.
The incident is the second fatality off Lesbos this month. The island, located off the Turkish coast, remains one of the main transit points for migrants trying to reach the European Union.
Greece was on the front lines during the 2015-2016 migration crisis, when more than a million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa passed through its islands to Europe.
The flow of migrants has decreased in recent years, but Athens has tightened entry rules after a new surge in arrivals, including along the route from Libya to the islands of Crete and Gavdos.
