Tanzania unrest continues: protesters clash with police - 1

Hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Tanzania's commercial capital today to demand that the national electoral commission stop announcing election results after they sparked protests that led to the deployment of the armed forces and the suspension of internet access, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.

State television broadcast the results of Wednesday's election, in which the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, which has ruled the country since independence in 1961, is seeking another term.

Presidential candidates from the two main opposition parties were banned from running and incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan faced 16 candidates from smaller parties with very limited campaigning.

Hundreds of protesters clashed with police in the country's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, for a third day on Wednesday.

The unrest erupted on Wednesday afternoon after young people took to the streets to protest against the harassment of opposition leaders and the limited choice at the polls. Protesters set fire to several cars, a gas station and police stations.

The government has not yet commented on the extent of the damage or whether there have been any casualties.

The organization „Amnesty International“ said two people were killed in Wednesday's protests.

The protests have spread across the country and the government has postponed the resumption of colleges and universities, which was expected to take place on Monday.

Army chief General Jacob John Mkunda condemned the violence and said yesterday that the armed forces would work with other security agencies to bring the situation under control.
