According to a study by the European Council for Transport Safety and Security, Greece is among the five most dangerous countries in Europe in terms of road safety in 2025, with 64 deaths per million inhabitants, BNT reports.

The most dangerous European country for driving remains Serbia, where 78 deaths per million inhabitants were recorded in 2024. It is followed by Romania and Bulgaria, with 77 and 74 deaths per million inhabitants, respectively. Greece and Croatia complete the top five with 64 and 62 deaths.

At the opposite end of the ranking is Norway, determined as the safest country for driving in Europe with only 16 deaths per million inhabitants. Sweden (20) and Malta (21) are also among the best performers.

The study highlights that Balkan and Eastern European countries continue to have high road fatality rates, while Scandinavian countries are seen as examples of effective road safety.

A further report by the International Transport Forum states that speeding is a factor in around 18% of fatal road accidents in Greece. It highlights that stricter enforcement of speed limits could significantly reduce the number of accidents. Calculations show that a 5% increase in speed increases the risk of an accident by 10% and the risk of a fatal accident by 20%.
