Kremlin: Peace plan for Ukraine must eliminate the roots of the conflict - 1

The Kremlin said today that any peace plan for Ukraine must eliminate the roots of the conflict and that despite the contacts with the United States, no official negotiations are currently underway with Washington, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

According to two American officials, the United States has signaled to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Kiev must accept a framework prepared by them for ending the war, which envisages the cession of territories and some weapons to Russia.

The "Axios" media first reported a new 28-point plan that would see Ukraine and Europe receive security guarantees from the United States if Kiev agreed to territorial concessions in parts of eastern Ukraine not currently under Moscow's control.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he had nothing to add to the August briefing after the Russia-US summit in Alaska. "We can't add anything new to what was said in Anchorage," he said.

According to Peskov, Moscow and Washington have not held formal consultations or negotiations on a peace plan for Ukraine. "There are no consultations at the moment. Of course there are contacts, but a process that could be defined as consultations - no, he added.

When asked whether President Vladimir Putin had been informed about the “28-point peace plan“, Peskov said: “I have nothing to add to what I have already said“.

The spokesman stressed that resolving the situation in Ukraine must lead to eliminating the root causes of the conflict.
