The movement of the metro, trams and electric trains in Athens has been temporarily suspended after a fatal accident involving a worker in Piraeus, reports the publication “Kathimerini“. The interruption is in the interval between 12:00 and 18:00, reports News.bg.

Line 1 of the metro on the Kifissia - Piraeus route is affected, as well as lines 2 and 3, along with all tram lines.

According to initial information, a rolling stock technician died during a routine technical inspection at the Piraeus repair base. The worker was crushed by a heavy load that fell on him. Firefighters pulled him out from under the load and rushed him to a hospital in Piraeus, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The vice president of the Athens metro workers' union SELMA, Spyros Revitis, said the tragedy was not accidental but the result of safety lapses and a systematic underestimation of risks. He called for urgent and serious improvements to prevent future incidents.

The circumstances surrounding the tragic incident are being investigated.
