White House deploys federal agents against migrant criminals in New Orleans - 1

The US Department of Homeland Security announced that federal agents will be deployed to deal with migrants in another US city governed by Democrats, New Orleans, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The operation in the city in the southern state of Louisiana will target migrant criminals, including those who have been released after arrest, a department spokeswoman said today.

However, the "New York Times" wrote that most of those arrested in previous operations had no criminal records.

The statement did not specify which or how many federal agents would be deployed to New Orleans, nor for how long.

US President Donald Trump indicated yesterday that he would soon deploy National Guard troops to New Orleans. Trump stressed that Louisiana's Republican Governor Jeff Landry had asked him for help for the city.

The Trump administration has sparked controversy in recent months with its operations against migrants – most recently in the Democratic-controlled cities of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Chicago, Illinois.

Particular criticism was directed at the actions of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, some of whose officers wear masks, and at the actions of border agents, whom critics accuse of arbitrariness and aggressive behavior, DPA reports.
