Hundreds of flights were canceled after a winter storm with heavy snowfall hit New York and much of the northeastern states of the US, DPA reported, BTA reported.
According to data from "Flight Aware" (FlightAware), which monitors air traffic in American airspace, 1,659 flights were canceled in the country yesterday - almost ten times more than the previous day.
A winter storm warning remains in effect for the region, with freezing rain forecast in some places.
The US National Weather Service is predicting up to 13 centimeters of snow in New York, and up to 28 cm in the areas north and northeast of the city. Local authorities have urged residents to avoid travel and stay home if possible. According to media reports, the storm could cause the heaviest snowfall in the city in three years.
Flights were also canceled at airports in Philadelphia and Baltimore, as well as in Toronto, Canada's largest business center.
